Start/stop/reboot

Start/stop/reboot a VM

This guide explains how to start, stop, and reboot a OneCloud VM (instance) from the OneCloud interface.

Important

Stopping a VM can cause downtime. Always ensure your applications can handle an unexpected shutdown (for example, by using clean shutdown procedures inside the OS).

Where to manage power actions

  1. Log in to the OneProvider Client Area.
  2. Open OneCloud and select your project.
  3. Click the VM/instance you want to manage.
  4. Use the power controls on the instance page.

Button labels may vary, but commonly include Start, Stop, and Reboot.

Start a VM

Use Start to power on a VM that is currently stopped.

  • The instance status should change to Running once started.
  • Wait a moment for the operating system services (SSH/RDP) to become available.

Stop a VM

Use Stop to power off the VM.

  • This will take the server offline.
  • For best results, stop services and shut down the OS cleanly first (when possible).

Caution

Forcing a stop/shutdown can lead to filesystem or database corruption if the OS is not shut down cleanly.

Reboot a VM

Use Reboot to restart the VM.

  • This is useful after installing updates or changing system settings.
  • Expect a brief interruption while the VM reboots.

If the VM is unresponsive

If the VM does not respond to reboot or you cannot connect:

  • Wait a few minutes (the OS may still be booting)
  • Check Console access (if available)
  • Consider Rescue mode / recovery (if supported)
  • If the issue persists, open a support ticket with:
    • Instance ID/name
    • Region/location
    • What action you attempted and what happened
